Drew Barrymore’s Weight Loss Journey: ‘I’ve Found That Elusive “B” Called Balance’

See the simple morning drink the actress swears by to kick-start her day

Drew Barrymore has always been outspoken about her wellness journey, and more specifically, how hard she’s had to work to maintain her good health, confidence and energy. Balancing being a mom with a multifaceted career as a talk show host, actress, producer, author and businesswoman hasn’t always made it easy to stick to a robust fitness regimen. And yet, it’s during this busy phase of life that Barrymore is her best self! Here’s everything we know about Drew Barrymore’s weight loss and how she prioritizes her health goals.

Drew Barrymore’s weight loss journey has had ups and downs

In a 2020 Instagram post, Barrymore shared before-and-after photos of herself during and well after pregnancy (she gave birth to her two kids in 2012 and 2014, respectively) and explained the work she put into losing weight and creating healthier habits.

“I go up and I go down,” she wrote in the caption. “The rollercoaster of my body is a challenging, but beautiful ride. I made two kids. The single most important purpose for me being on this planet is for them! It is a true miracle I was able to have these two girls. So whatever the aftermath on my body, well bring it on! That said, there have been times I have stood in my closet and just cried. Hated getting dressed. Didn’t feel good! It takes so much for me to look decent. I have to eat just right and work my ass off!”

The importance of finding balance

She went on to say she had a natural tendency to be bigger, and encouraged her followers not to be deceived by or compare themselves to people who appear to be thin right after giving birth.

“If I looked decent on anything I have done since I had my two kids, I have clawed my way there,” she said. “You can too! However, it is hard to sustain and can take a lot of the joy out of life with food. But not anymore. NOW I have found that elusive B called BALANCE. 45! It only took 45 years to find myself. Right where I am supposed to be. And it’s not perfect. But it’s me. And most importantly, I want to share it with you.”

The keys to Drew Barrymore’s weight loss success

In 2017, Barrymore revealed she had lost upward of 20 pounds while preparing to film her Netflix series, The Santa Clarita Diet. Here’s how she lost the weight by adopting healthier habits.

She prioritizes protein

Barrymore told Us Weekly at the time that she had been loosely following the approach of vegan nutritionist Kimberly Snyder. While her diet was mostly plant-based, she made alterations to keep up her protein intake.

“I feel really great,” she said. “I followed Kimberly Snyder’s methods, but I added some protein like fish and chicken since she’s all vegetarian or vegan. I’ve been very disciplined and all I did was cry and dream about pizza. I still am dreaming and crying about pizza,” she joked.

She starts her day with hot lemon water

The same year, Barrymore told Grubstreet that she views a big glass of hot lemon water as “a great way to jump-start your body for the day.”

And she’s not alone. Jennifer Nicole Bianchini, RD, a dietitian with Body to Soul Health agrees that lemon water is often promoted as a weight loss-friendly drink for good reason.

“Lemons are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress, boost the immune system and keep our cells functioning efficiently,” she explains. “When cells are functioning optimally, metabolism runs more smoothly which helps in the fat-burning process.”

She makes time for a morning workout

In a video posted to Instagram in 2020, the E.T. alum said there was “just no excuse” to not work out, even when she’s constantly traveling and working.

She had been streaming fitness instructor Taryn Toomey’s The Class, which combines cardio, strength training and mindfulness. Barrymore explained that the music and dance aspects of the workout sparked her motivation and energy.

“Right here in your room, one hour, get it done, and I don’t know about you, but if I don’t get it done in the morning, it’s not getting done,” Barrymore told viewers.

And as reported by People, the Charlie’s Angels star said that “it’s okay” with her that she has to eat very clean and do an hour of Pilates “at least four days a week” to maintain her weight. “That is just my journey,” she said.

She decompresses with yoga

Barrymore also posted a video of herself in 2020 after sweating it out during a yoga class to share a revelation she had during her session.

“Stillness is as powerful and thought-provoking and emotionally compelling as hurling yourself around, throwing yourself to music, working out your anger, working through things,” she explained. “Being quiet and still can bring some of the most powerful things to our bodies than anything else. So I want to promote being a long, long, long-time yogie.”
